Russia seeks to prevent arms race in outer space

The Russian Federation wants to prevent an arms race in outer space and welcomes the efforts of the BRICS countries toward this end, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Russia's BRICS Sherpa Sergei Ryabkov said, addressing the opening session of the VII Academic Forum. He recalled that on 20 May 2015, BRICS Consultations on Security of Outer Space Activities took place in Moscow.

Mr Ryabkov also said that Russia has repeatedly and in various formats proposed putting into practice the idea of "no first deployment of weapons in outer space."

"I sincerely welcome the fact that our work within the BRICS framework is not simply generating a positive response but is also being translated into practice, among other things, in the documents that we have signed and approved with virtually all the BRICS countries," he said.
