BRICS Prosecutors General to Meet in Sochi

The BRICS countries' prosecutor offices intend to strengthen cooperation against crime and for human rights, said Marina Gridneva, the spokesperson for the Russian Prosecutor General's Office.

Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika met with his Indian counterpart, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, on the sidelines of the 13th SCO General Prosecutors Meeting in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Mr Chaika expressed confidence that the implementation of decisions taken at the SCO and BRICS summits in Ufa in July would further promote cooperation between the Russian and Indian prosecutor offices.

The Russian Prosecutor General invited his Indian colleague to the 7th Regional Conference for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia sponsored by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), which will be held in Sochi in November 2015.

Mr Chaika said that a meeting of the BRICS countries' prosecutors general would be held on the sidelines of the 7th Regional Conference to discuss possible areas for cooperation in combating new challenges and threats and protecting human rights and freedoms. He also offered his Indian colleague a draft interdepartmental agreement on cooperation, which he proposed signing in Sochi.

Mr Rohatgi said in reply that the prosecutor offices of Russia and India should strengthen their cooperation on a bilateral basis and also in the BRICS format.
